On setup it finish with a installation failuer.i checked the device manager and it didn't install it has pci modem(!) i tryed install by select decive and selected "Conexant D480 MDC v.92 Modem" It installed and with no problem in decive manager, but i checked Query Modem "the port that the modem is attacted to could not be open." i veiwed log report "open the modem device failed with error 000005aa" What is this code? I have tryed uninsalling and disableing modem. Checked bios config for serial ports it's set for com1. Have tried changing to disable ,com2,com3,and com4 with the same. Also tryed other modem driver from dell on this page.Dell Thanks for the help.

Reply: (edit)Modems have their own comm ports. Try disabling any of the laptop's hardware comm ports in the bios.

Reply: (edit)Are you certain this modem is an integrated unit and not a PCI add in card. If an add in card and you also have a listing for a modem in the BIOS then you have TWO. You may be installing the wrong drivers. Download a utility called SIW and use it to see what hardware is present. http://www.download3k.com/SIW/Downl...

Reply: (edit)"Have tried changing to disable ,com2,com3,and com4" beckrl, I doubt that you have that many comm ports in your laptop, so I assumed that you were not really disabling them in the bios. Also, you didn't say anything about disabling comm 1.

Reply: (edit)Thanks It's an intergrated modem which when installed use com3. The pci modem is the way Windows list the modem and gives (!) to updated or reinstall correct driver. Only one physical com port listed when enabled in bios com1. I'm thinking the modem hardware is bad.

Reply: (edit)aegis Bios ****Basic Device Config**** Serial Port: Disable Infrared Data Port:Disable With this setting device manager has no com ports and modem on com3 To me this would be the correct setting. If i set the bios to com1 then windows would show com1 in decvice manager and modem on com3 which again would seem correct.

Reply: (edit)Yes OtheHill, It shows the same Conexant v92 modem. I like this program thanks. Everest home edition is also good. Do you know a program to test the modem or port other than the windows Query?

Reply: (edit)Try removing all references to the modem in the Registry. Reboot. Reinstall the drivers. It usually takes more than three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech. - Mark Twain

Reply: (edit)Also, sometimes multiple instances of hardware can get installed. This dowsn't show when in normal mode. Boot to safe mode and check device manager there.
