Hello!

I have a used Dell Latitude laptop. The sticker indicates that the following operating systems are acceptable:
Windows 98
Windows NT 4.0
Windows 2000

This laptop has Windows 95 for some reason. I have a Windows XP cd...would it be possible to install Win XP on this computer? Would I have to upgrade to Win 98 first?

Also, it takes a while for the computer to start up...what could be causing this? can this be "fixed"? and if so, how?

Thanks in advance for all replies!
Have a great day!

How much ram does the laptop have? XP requires a min. of 128mb but it should really have at least 256mb.

As far as the slow issue, did this just start or has it always been slow? Again, it could have something to do with the ammount of ram you have.

Keep in mind that WinXP is only allowed to be installed on one computer at a time. Registration will fail if you do attempt this.

Heh, yeah...but...I have XP installed on 3 computers and it works just fine. All I've had to do is call in to Microsoft and activate it over the phone.

Suzanne, I think you will find that you will not be able to load XP onto your Latitude. As already stated the minimum RAM should be 256mb and that is the bare minimum. Chances are at 128mb your Latitude is at it's max.

I own a Dell Latitude CPi D300XT and that to can only support the OS's you mention.

If you look underneath your Latitude there should be a Service Tag/s it's the 5 digit one you require, enter it here:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/upgrades/en/hub?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs

or navigate to Dell Upgrades and enter it there. It will tell you what you can, if possible upgrade.
