Comment:

The laptop is completely dead. No power. No lights. I did the test holding down the <Fn> key while pressing the power button. No lock LED's present. I had a couple of people tell me that it could be the motherboard, or the DC jack? Any ideas how I can find out exactly what the problem is without too much cost involved?
I would like to get it running again if its possible.
Thanks for your help.

Did you remove the battery and connect the AC power? Does it boot with only the battery connected? A little more detail would be good.

Did you check here:?

Take a look at the jack that the AC adapter plugs into. Try and wiggle it to see if it's loose. It's common for them to break loose from the motherboard due to the constant plugging and unplugging.
It 'might' be a pretty simple resolder job.

I have simillar issue. When the power button is pressed, the green power light emits for 5 seconds, then goes out completely.

Just prior to this symptom I got a boot-time message "CMOS battery low!" except I have been able to boot other laptops and desktops with no CMOS battery just fine, since the only purpose for it is to retain CMOS settings after shutdown. However could my CPU or Motherboard have become unusable from this (It seems this would be the symptom)?

(FYI, Dell doesnt have service plans or free phone support for these old laptops, thats why we're here.)

I have the same trouble, the green lights goes out, the laptop is dead. It was OK until now. Reading all your comments it looks like that these machines all dying at the same time. I wonder if there is a remedy.
