I have a 4 year old dell latitude c600 that runs hot although the fan is clean. The lcd sometimes has a magenta tinge when I boot up, the screen brightness flickers and eventually turns normal-colored, and then within a few minutes, the whole screen goes dark (not off, just dark). Does not seem to relate to moving lcd panel, cables look ok, settings ok. Is this the end of the road for my lcd, or should I try replacing the video inverter? Or is it something else? Could it be an overheating problem?

Could be your video card is on the way out or overheating...could be your monitor is on the way out

You claim it runs hot, then don't give any temps to back up your claim. It would also help if you provided your system specs...what P4 do you have? What video card? 256MB isn't very much RAM, especially if you're using onboard video...

Asus A7N8X-X

768MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7
Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB

I don't know what p4 is or what kind of video card I have. I'm a user, not a fixer. I don't use the system for onboard video or anything requiring much ram. It runs hot enough to burn bare skin if you sit it on your lap.

My bad. I should be on the novice forum. This message is in regards to a P3 850 mhz Latitude C600, w/ATI M3 video card. I use the laptop just for business applications--no games. I can't check the CPU temp in BIOS; when I enter setup there is no option to check cpu health (or I am doing something wrong, which is probable).

Still looking for specific advice on display problem. Do not want to have LCD panel replaced on this ancient nag--too expensive.
