Dell laptop shutting down issue

Dell / LATITUDE D531

Specs: Windows XP
Hi, my work laptop has recently starting shutting itself down by itself when i am half way through working. I would ring IT through work but there will be unavaliable until next week so i was hoping you could tell me what the problem is? The underneath gets very hot and thats when it seems to turn off. I have recently had to battery replaced so i don't think it would be that. The second light (next to the 'on' light) flashes on and off but has done for a while. Any ideas?? Thanks

It sounds like an overheating problem from what you describe. The machine shuts down to prevent damage when it exceeds a certain temp. It could be caused by many things i.e. poor air flow, dying or non functional fan etc. Try elevating it to allow air flow under the machine by placing it on 2 books, one at each end, and see if it persists. That's not a solution, just something to try to narrow it down. Good Luck.
