Dell laptop Screen wont turn on

Dell / INSPIRION 1520
January 2, 2010 at 20:20:19
Specs: Windows XP

I left my laptop in perfect working condition when i left for a camping trip for 6 days, it was left OFF on my bedside table.

When i came back, i turned it on and it made the start up click click sounds, the power light and battery light came on but the screen stayed black.

Ive been searching for hours on the Dell website, handbook and other various computer sites and have tried different things like removing the battery pack, changing power outlets, pressing FN + F5 as well as FN + F8 but no such luck.

I have tried emailing Dell tech support but they wont seem to want to take details off anyone whos warrenty expired in June 09. No phone numbers to call or anything.

Can anyone help me.. The computer in only 18 months old.. :-(

Dell Chat is here:

But try this:

Remove all power (power cord and main large battery)
Hold down the ON button for 20secs (dispersing internal voltage)
Put the power cord back in (leaving the main battery out still)
Turn on

Did it work?
If so, shutdown normally and refit the main battery
You're good to go :)

Thanks for the link too.. although when i do try and enter it, it tells me 'Our records show that your Dell product support warranty has expired. We are
still here for you and offer a variety of solutions, some of which are listed below. '

I see

Well this part you stated:
"i turned it on and it made the start up click click sounds"
Are you meaning normal startup sounds or strange "click" sounds?

I'm just going to state what I'd do
Do that above voltage disperse, then...
Remove and re-insert the Hard Drive
Remove and re-insert the Ram
Plug in the power again and turn on

It's way soon for your screen, ccfl bulb or inverter to go bad..
Is there a key combination that sets your computer for an external monitor? You may have inadvertenly set it to external. You can try using an external monitor and see if everythings works normaly except the screen.

Great News - I took the battery and power cord out and left it over night..

Today i placed the battery back in and inserted the power cord - pressed on and DONE!

It works - Thanks for all your help and suggestions! :-)

Thanks for the update
I'm not sure why just holding down the ON button for 20secs with all power out didn't do the same thing (?)

Possibly the battery was running hot? Not sure.
