My laptop screen went off and is totally black when I pressed Fn key with F8 key. How can I turn it back on again? I was trying to adjust the brightness for when my laptop is unplugged.

See the User's or Owner's manual .

Some laptops have a key combo for adjusting the brightness of the built in display , or two of them - one for increasing brightness, the other for decreasing the brightness, and another key combo that toggles the display - built in on / external on / sometimes both.

When do you get a black screen ?
All the time, or you get video while booting every time but not after Windows is supposed to load?

The latter is caused by a different problem.

The former can have several causes, including

- the main battery doesn't have enough "poop" when the AC adapter is not plugged in, usually because it doesn't have enough capacity left because it needs to be charged. Plug in the AC adapter. If you still get no video, hold the power button until the computer shuts off, let the battery charge for awhile, then try booting the computer.

- you reloaded Windows from a regular CD or DVD, but you didn't load the mboard's main chipset drivers, the computer went into Standby or Hibernate mode, the screen went black, it won't come out of that mode - hold the power button until the computer shuts off, press it briefly to boot normally - you will have video. Load the main chipset drivers.

All seems to be ok now. Laptop is new so there is no hardward problem with the screen. The Fn + F8 key toggled it off but I didn't know how to toggle it on again. Good thing I have my external monitor. So I closed the laptop last night before bed. This morning opened it, it was on and screen was lit. I've tried all the combination keys I can think of to brighten the screen when unplugged. Went through all the settings for brightness "on battery" and "plugged in" still the screen is dim when unplugged. Guess the next thing is to take advantage of my service contract with Dell and see if they have suggestions. I see so many other people using their laptops unplugged with a bright screen, it must be possible for this top-of-the-line super loaded laptop.
Thanks for your help. Such a valuable service.

See the User's or Owner's manual .
What the key combos do is explained in that.

It's often already in your All Programs list somewhere, possibly under a brand name heading.
