Dell Inspiron Laptop beeping

My friend has a laptop that seems to be continuously beeping for no particular reason. It seems to start as soon as the boot process passes over to the operating system (Win2k Pro) and doesn't stop until the laptop is off.
Any input at all would be very much appreciated as it is very annoying to listen to it while working.

That beeping noise is suppose to warn you that your battery is low and your laptop will be shutting down soon. That's only thing I can think it could be. You may have a bad battery. I believe you can turn that alarm off in the power management software, or somewhere in your control panel. You'll know it when you find it. It will specifically refer to a low battery alarm. ON or OFF. If it's not in power management it may in device manager. It's been a long time since I've had to do that. My memmory is about as clear as mud on that. SORRY. Hope I helped some.

It doesn't seem to be that... we've tried several different batteries. That's what I first thought. Any other ideas would be appreciated.
thx

Do you have a key on the keyboard that is stuck? Nothing's been spilled on the laptop? The power inverter that the battery contacts, may be going bad, or have some damage to the pins, or just not seating properly, thus giving a false alarm on the battery. Have you tired disabling the alarm? Sounds like it's time to tear into that sucker and find out what's going on.
