regards chris

Hi,
It sounds like the inverter board that powers the backlight may be on its way out. When you can see a very faint image on the screen (best tried by shining a torch through the back of the screen) then this can be either the inverter, or sometimes the backlight itself that has failed.
You mentioned that you could see a kind of orange tinge to the screen before it went out, so this sounds more like an inverter problem. The only way to test this would be to replace the inverter board and see if the screen works. Hopefully this will be the case, as backlights themselves can be replaced, but these are very delicate and it is quite difficult to do this.
The only other alternative when it is the backlight itself is a screen replacement, but as you probably already know, these are expensive. You should start by trying a replacement inverter. Could maybe find something on ebay, but these aren't usually too expensive anyway. Hope this helps.

i have stripped it down so can get to the back of the screen. and toatly remove it. where is the inverter board? on the back of the screen or in the main case? where also is the back light as i did here something along those lines when my friend gave me it. thx 4 u help
regards

the backlight or lights are usaly inside the top or the bottom of the lcd and can be replaced with great care
the inverter bd may be either on the back of the lcd or an interface between the lcd and the main board

there is a screen on ebay for a inspiron 8000 not to badly priced looks like it will fit? does ne one know if they are the same fittings etc. would the change in model formm inspiron 8000 to 81000 only be internal eg cpu memory and not cosmetic?
thx

Hi,
I don't know for sure if that screen will fit. I believe the only thing you can do is try it. The problem is that screens from different manufacturers with differing connections are sometimes used in laptops of the same model.
For example, a couple of laptops I used to own (both same make and model - Tosh Satellite Pro 4600) both used completely different screens with different connections to the video and inverter.
What you need is a screen with the same video cable and inverter connections as the one you are currently using. Doesn't really matter if it is from a different manufacturer, so long as the connections are compatible with your specific laptop.

Hi mrcload,
Forgot to say, don't know if you have already tried different inverter, but should really try that first. May save yourself price of screen if inverter is the problem here.
Also, as far as screen you mentioned from Inspiron 8100 goes, you might want to try contacting Dell to see if they can let you know if screens they used in 8100 are compatible with your 8000 model (could let them know make/model no. from back of screen you already have). Just a thought. Hope you get on okay.

The screen could be the same and could work.
The problem would lie in the way it interfaces with the main board.
