Hello, I'm having problems with my machine and Dell are wanting me to send Check System Event Log for Thermal Messages or Fan Failures.
My problem is I can't access the log, each time I tell them they send out same email.
Doe anyone know how to view System Event Log. My machine is 5motnhs old and reboots and the fan's can be noisy.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Sue

To view the system Log: Right click My Computer > Manage > Computer Management Local > System Tools > Event Viewer > System.
Shortcut to the Event Viewer: Go to Start > Run > type eventvwr.msc > OK

Thanks for your reply, I did do this, but got the following back from Dell :(
System event Log and Event Viewer are different applications.
Appreciate your help though, thanks.

Sorry Sue, I am confused by their response. You view the System Log using the Event Viewer.
Maybe someone else will understand and pitch in.

On second thought. Did you use the Event Viewer to scan the System Log for "Thermal Messages or Fan Failures". I 'think' that's what they wanted you to do.

You're not the only one that is confused. I think I'll just have to return it and let them find what they are looking for. It's under warrenty as it's 5 months old.
I'm just a little worried that they won't find anything/blame software and bill me, would/can they do that?.
I'm sure the fan's shouldn't be humming like this one :)
The pc has been reebooting and getting a little noisy recently.
cheers

I can't answer that, Sue. But I would suggest that you follow their instructions and scan the system log for any fan problems.
If the fan is making unusual noises, it could be stopping, causing overheating and the rebooting.
XP will reboot if it encounters and unrecoverable error. You can disable the reboot and make it stop with a Blue Screen of Death. That screen should have an error code that might help with trouble shooting.
To have XP display the error message instead of rebooting:
1. Click Start, and then right-click My Computer.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
4. Under System failure, click to clear the Automatically restart check box.
5. Click OK, and then click OK.

Thanks for that info, i will do that!
On the scan log i used i did get the following messages
Disk Warning with code 51
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation. No thermal messages or fan warnings.

I'm not sure if that disk warning is serious or not. But I would let Dell know what you found.
Just FYI, You can have the Event Viewer create a file of the system log and email it to them. That is, if they request it.
