Specs: Windows 7pro
I am running windows 7 pro on a 32bit Dell Inspiron 530 with the realtek on board audio. Testing on the sound control panel for 5.1 audio, all chanels test good however playback of audio from windows media center or QuickTime Player, LR and RR chanels are quiet.

The Realtek speaker test is programmed to play a sound through each speaker in turn to confirm that you've connected your speakers properly and that they are working.

However, when playing music, you'll only get sound to all speakers (5.1 surround sound) if the source music was recorded in 5.1 surround sound. So if the music you are playing was only recorded in stereo (2 channels), you'll only get stereo output (nothing through the rear speakers).

You can't expect to get surround sound from a two-channel stereo or single-channel mono recording.

I am aware of that however as I have recently replaced a Dell dimension 8400 with the Inspiron and have had a sound blaster driving the 5.1 speaker system, I was used to the 'simulated' 5.1 sound which I take it the on board Realtek is incapable of?
