so i have a dell inspiron 1150 laptop. ive had it for about a year or two.. i think its an 04 model. anyway i opened it up today and the video was completely screwed up.. lines everywhere.. you cant even see a picture except the windows opening screen which looks almost crumpled. i took a few pix with my camera phone. this.. doesn't appear to be all that fixable.. im assuming my lcd is going..it did it only one other time but after a few restarts it was normal again.. and even lastnight the display was just fine. i dont know what i can do besides reinstall windows.. but even then i think this is prolly a hardware issue. the lcd isnt cracked either so.. i have no idea. sorry the pix suck..

ive restarted the pc dozens of times.. even left it running for awhile.. still hasn't fixed itself.. can anyone help?? thanks!

when u restart the computer hit F8 the moment u see the dell logo...select safemode...hit enter...select os...hit enter...click yes' it work in safemode...if ur screen is normal in safe mode then its a driver issue ...reload the driver...or do system restore ...if u still have a bad screen...it can be related to h/w....try it...bobby

Hi,

Likely problem is the backlight for the LCD screen has gone.

To check this try connecting up the laptop to a standard CRT monitor.

If you get a picture, this is the most likely area.

Other possibilities are the ribbon cable from motherboard to screen is loose or broken.

Either way it will need to go to a repair shop.

Thanks ceri..

I dont know if its even worth repairing or not.. but I guess it wouldn't hurt to get a quote. im sure i'd be better off buying a new laptop though.. im just annoyed about the whole situation. :(

damn no edit.

i tried to connect to a standard CRT.. im pretty sure i tried long before the LCD issue and i never got it to show a picture at all. At any rate, i tried it again and the monitor doesn't even see the laptop at all or.. viseversa.. i dont know if theres a setting or something but.. i cant even see it to change it either way.

hi again i just did some reading and found the CRT/LCD button on my laptop. The display is fine on the CRT... so i guess that means the LCD is definitely going/gone. I hope it isnt too expensive to fix.. and ideas how much a repair might cost? if its too much ill just have to get another laptop.. its a shame something like that would go in such short amount of time. I hardly even used the laptop as it was at our summer home for most of the year.. i finally took it home in august. figures.

Usually an LCD and service costs close to what a replacement low end unit would cost.

This is a why a 3 year warranty is always a good idea on a laptop.
