dell e771a Monitor not readable

Specs: Windows XP, PIII 800/128 megs
Monitor has worked fine since new in 2003. Suddenly it is illegible. All the normal graphics are visible, but blurry, and superimposed over them is a "plaid" sort of pattern of horizontal and vertical lines. The On screen setup menu for the monitor opens up fine, and is perfectly legible. So I think the monitor or video card drivers are somehow corrupt, or the monitor setup in Control panel somehow changed. Since I can't read the text, it's very hard to access the menus and make changes. I managed to try System Restore to 3 days ago when it worked fine, and that did not help.

Sounds like a problem with the video card...overheating?
