My Dell Dimension 2400 is really acting like its buggy i found 4 viruses then 2 and then double checked for none and i erased cookies. Can anyone tell me what is IN a dimension 2400 or give me some virus help.
I'D really like to know which chipset and info on the dimension though so maybe i can upgrade it .. I was thinking since it was running a lil slower why not take a ram card from my broken dell which boosted it from 256 to 512!!! heh Still it acts buggy but if i get a new hard drive will that help? all the information would be lost but the comp would be fresh. its a 40GB hard drive in the dell but i already have windows xp prof and i could put that into the 300GB hard drive which i would buy for 70 bux on sale. If you say that you have a virus problem, all you need is a good old-fashioned system format. This will delete everything on the hard drive, but it will restore the system to how you bought it. You can do this with your Dell format discs(i don't know what they're called, sorry i don't have Dell). These came in your system's box when you bought it. If you further help, you can alternatively access the Dell forums, here: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/user_signup?dest_url=http%3A%2F%2Fforums.us.dell.com%2Fsupportforums%2Fboard%2Fmessage%3Fboard.id%3Dwebpc_other%26message.id%3D6554%26c%3Dus%26l%3Den%26cs%3D555%26s%3Dbiz
cookies are tasty

The 2400 is, just about, not upgradable.
You may want to check that the extra 256MB RAM you added was, in fact, compatible to the RAM you already had in there.
Incompatible RAM will make a PC buggy.Compatible RAM is the best upgrade you can do to your PC. You should also be able to add a larger hard drive if you need it.
I would suspect that your 2400 has the same restore capabilites as does my Dell that was purchased at the beginning of this year as I suspect yours was.
Look in the Manual at C:\DELL\DOCS\MANUAL, Advanced Troubleshooting, Restoring your Operating System where you will likely find:
Quote
Using Dell PC Restore by SymantecUse Dell PC Restore by Symantec only as the last method to restore your operating system. PC
Restore restores your hard drive to the operating state it was in when you purchased the computer.
Any programs or files added since you received your computer—including data files—are permanently deleted from the hard drive. Data files include documents, spreadsheets, e-mail messages, digital photos, music files, and so on. If possible, back up all data before using PC Restore.
NOTICE: Using PC Restore permanently deletes all data on the hard drive and removes any applications or drivers installed after you received your computer. If possible, back up the data before using PC Restore. To use PC Restore:
1 Turn on the computer.
During the boot process, a blue bar with www.dell.com appears at the top of the screen.
2 Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press <Ctrl><F11>.
If you do not press <Ctrl><F11> in time, let the computer finish restarting, and then
restart the computer again.
NOTICE: If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot in the following step.
3 On the next screen that appears, click Restore.
4 On the next screen, click Confirm.
The restore process takes approximately 6–10 minutes to complete.
5 When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer.
NOTE: Do not manually shut down the computer. Click Finish and let the computer completely reboot.
6 When prompted, click Yes.
The computer restarts.
Because the computer is restored to its original operating state, the screens that appear, such as the End User License Agreement, are the same ones that
appeared the first time the computer was turned on.
7 Click Next.
The System Restore screen appears and the computer restarts.
8 After the computer restarts, click OK.
End of quoteThe manual also has all of the Specifications that you will need or want to know about the PC within the Apendix.

Bryan

You can also go to the Dell support suite and put in your service tag and see EXACTLY what was shipped with your machine. Again, wrong RAM is a possibility and they are not all interchangeable. Go to www.crucial.com and see what exactly you need. Since you have obviously no experience with computers/ upgrades you might want to leave this to someone who does.
You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

thank you for all your help i appreciate it and no worries i know about compatability and my ram is doing fine. Thanks again
