Comment: Hi all; My son's CD-ROM has stopped working. I've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it. I've even tried two different CD-ROMs in that bay. I've also changed the ribbon cable and updated the driver and still get "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (Code 39)" when I try to install new hardware. It's a Dell HL-DT-ST-CD-ROM GCR 848-1B. I was going to try and put the CD-ROM on the same cable as the HDD but the connectors are totally different, they look like HDD connectors on the whole cable. Does anyone have any ideas? Harry

Reply: (edit)I found the solution. I had to remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} Harry
