Have anyone got a Dell 3000CN/3100CN printer to automatically grab paper from the optional tray when the MPF tray is empty?
I have the printer for awhile and finally decide to put it to use. It was a gift from Dell :(. So I figure let's get an additional paper tray for the printer to improve printing time. Went and got the 500 sheet tray, install it to the printer, power up, and bam tray error! Turn out I need the 250 sheet optional trap for it to work. So I got the 250 sheet tray too. So finally I have this 4 feet plus printer, the standard printer the come with a paper tray call MPF ontop of a 250 sheet tray and below those is my 500 sheet optional tray. It seems to work fine no more tray error message. Load all three trays with paper and was happy at least for abit. When the MPF tray is out of paper it doesn't grab from the other two trays. If i send a print job to the printer I get load MPF with paper. All the paper size and tray setup the same. I called Dell and their tech support said the printer is not build to do so..i was like $%^ you telling me I buy all this stuff and I can't even put it into use.
Anyway if anyone able to have the printer automatically grab paper from the optional trays let me know.

I haven't have much luck but think is a progress and for now I'll just have to live with it. I spoke to Dell and their technician said the printer is not made to auto feed..no money involve so their knowledge base is limited I guess. I found it by mistake so if anyone have this printer you can do like I did.
Open up the printer in control panel and right click on the printer, property, click on the option tab. You will see some optional tray under "Items". If you click on it below you will see "change setting", select the tray paper size on both the option 1 and 2 tray module, click apply or ok. Go back to the general tab and click on printing preferences, paper tray, under paper source select auto from the drop down list and click apply or ok. This will auto feed paper from the optional trays only not the MPF tray. If the priner is on a network the changes must be done also and you might have to manually make the change whenever you add the printer to a user.
Hope this help.
