Hi,

New to the forum and in need of help. I accidentally deleted the drivers for my CD ROM and DVD writer drives. I was able to find firmware for the CD-ROM drive (Lite-On) from Dell's website. I ran it and after being prompted to reboot, I did so. When windows started, it found the new hardware, but yet the drive is still not recognized. What gives?

Additionally, I found a driver for my Supera DSM 6S165P and when trying to run it, was greeted with "This driver is only for the DSM 6S165P...drive not found!"

This is not really my area of expertise. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You don't need special drivers for an optical drive. Windows generic drivers are all that's necessary.

Thank you both.

1) Then, why still are the drives not recognized/usable?

2) No, it is not laptop.

Start back at the beginning. You didn't just go into device manager and delete the drivers for no reason. Were you having a problem that prompted messing with drivers?

Are the two drives in question identified in the POST screens at startup?

I was actually doing Spyware scans with various programs,
and one of them picked up two items that were
categorized as drivers. I did a google search and I don't
remember seeing anything related to CD drives.

I thought nothing of it until later in the night when I went
to burn a DVD and Nero could not see any drives. I
subsequently went to My Computer to find that neither
drive was listed under 'drives with removable storage.'

Thanks again for your help.

Jim

You didn't answer OtheHill's question:

"Are the two drives in question identified in the POST screens at startup?"

Or to ask a little differently...are they recognized by the BIOS? If they're not being identified in the BIOS or on the POST screen, you most likely have some sort of hardware problem.

Have you tried a System Restore?

I thought of doing a restore. But for reasons that elude me, I had that feature turned off.

And to the previous poster, I did not check if they came up in the BIOS. I will do so and report back.

Thanks again to everyone for your help.

Your problem may be with the ASPI layer drivers. If you installed burning software or a scanner at any time the versions of these drivers may have been changed. Look at the link below to check the versions of ASPI and to change if necessary.

Thank you. It looks like my problem is with the ASPI layer. But I'm kind of lost on what to do with that info. That link seems like it has more to do with just ripping and burning, where my problem is actually seeing the drives.

Could anyone dumb this down and let me know specifically what to do? I'm sorry, but again, these types of problems are sort of out of my repertoire.

Thanks again,
Jim

There is a file called Fix ASPI. See if that will straighten things out for you. Below is a link to the DLoad.

Assuming I did it right, it didn't do anything.
