Comment:

I just purchased a computer from someone and it runs pretty slow. I have deleted items in the proper areas to try and ensure better performance but it is still acting up. I was trying to defrag but everytime i start it it just freezes...it never even starts and i cant do anything i end up having to reboot by manually turning the computer off. can anyone give me any advice or even websites. thanks

Why do you think he sold it? lol. I hope you didn't pay much. You didn't bother to list the specs or which operating system you're running but the Pavilion 6683 is better suited for Win9x/ME than WinXP. Install the max amount of RAM - 512MB (2 x 256MB).

Try running your defrag in Safe Mode.

Run Chkdsk on the drive. If the regular chkdsk runs clean, do a Chkdsk /R. That will scan the drive for any bad sectors. It takes a while.
