I've been advised to bring this issue to the general hardware forum.

I was running XP on a Jetway 266 motherboard with 512 meg DDR RAM, two CD drives, two hard drives, and a Geforce 4MX440 with a 400W power supply.

Something went bang, and all I get now is a beep from the motherboard and nothing else. Any advice? Check my original post for more details.

G'day,

Anything will go BANG if you put enough pressure on it,electrical or otherwise.
Just a thought: are you sure it was your PC that went BANG- as opposed to your monitor??
Do you get anything on the screen??
The error code is important, as has already been noted; so here is something that might help: Extract from IBM POST Error codes
Audio Code Sound Problem
---------------
Continuous ______________ PSU, system brd
Repeating short ....... PSU ,system brd
Short beeps Adapter (EGA)

So, candidates are PSU (will DEFINITELY BANG)
,system board- most lilkely CPU (does the CPU fan still run??)and the monitor card.

So, check PSU. Pull out the power cable from your floppy drive; turn on PC and then measure the voltages. The black cables are GND, the RED is +5V and the YELLOW is +12V.
This is an indicator that the PSU is probably OK.
This now points to the system board or Video adapter. Try changing the video card with a borrowed one and if this doesn't work then you will have to suspect the system board with the likely suspect being the CPU.
Post back with your results.
regards,
Elric
