Hi everyone. I have got another computer from my dads work and like the last one I got from them the power supply blew up and damaged the hardware. I'm not 100% sure about this computer though I think I may be able to rescue it. They replaced the power supply but the machine keeps randomly re-booting. So I tried it with Knoppix and I still get reboots. I then replaced the power supply with a spare I had, unplugged every component except for CPU, RAM and CD-ROM (to boot knoppix) and it still reboots. I went as far as disabling every onboard feature of the motherboard but still get reboots. I am going to test to see if its the onboard graphics soon and at the moment I am testing the ram with memtest, its been testing for about 30Mins now without errors (or rebooting).. I can also test the CPU with a spare but since the computer actually manages to do anything I figure the CPU must be fine. Is there anything else I should try? If I can get the computer working it will replace the family computer which is a 400MHz Celeron.
Thanks guys.

Have you checked System Health in bios to see if it is having any CPU overheating issues?

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

I dont think it is overheating because the heatsink seems cool but I will check in the bios. The computer restarted after about 40Mins in memtest, but didnt come up with any error messages... So I'm not gonna rule out the RAM yet.. I'm pretty sure the motherboard must be damaged from when the PSU went out, but I wont stop trying.. I'm going to see if a bios flash will do anything, dosent seem likely but I may as well rule every possibility out.
Thanks.

If the heatsink is cool, likely the CPU is frying.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

OK, I checked the CPU temps after it rebooted trying to load knoppix and the temps were at 26*C.. Perfectly acceptable.. I'll still reseat the heatsink though once I get some more thermal paste. Still gotta try a different video card.

OK, I tried a different video card and still got reboots. So I went into the bios again and saw an option to disable the cache, disabled the L2 cache still got reboots.. Disabled L1 Cache... TADA no more reboots and the slowest machine I have ever witnessed. I take out the 1Ghz Celeron and put in my spare 1.1GHz Celeron and it fires up with everything enabled Then it freezes at the XP loading screen. So I try knoppix and it reboots : (

So yes I have been defeated. Oh well I can use its ram hard drive and CD-ROM.. And it was interesting because its the first half height hard drive I have ever seen, very odd concidering this computer was a tower with standard hard drive bays. Thanks anyways guys.

Have you tried it without the modem?

Have you booted with the modem physically removed from the computer?

I didn't see where you mentioned the modem.

? yeah I took all PCI cards out, including the modem...

"I didn't see where you mentioned the modem."
Neither do I, heh.. What made you mention a modem? I dont often get computers given to me with internal modems but this one happend to have one.. Are you a phsykick? Heh.

Its a pitty I couldent get it working, I overclocked to 1.2GHz and I had a 9550 waiting to be installed along with a new HDD and some more RAM etc. Would have made a fine family computer, oh well you cant win them all.

Looks like the psu fried something on your mobo. In my experience when a psu goes bad, it takes out some part of the mobo with it a significant percentage of the time.

When you say you overclocked it to 1.2 mhz.

The Celeron 1000 has an internal multiplier of 10 and runs at 100MHz FSB. You can't unlock the multiplier so overclocking is achieved by changing the FSB higher than the specified 100MHz.

Does it do anything right without you attempting overclocking?

This overclocking you mention could cause
stress on other components.

I overclocked when I decided the motherboard was gone. And sorry I got it to 1.2GHz when I was testing the motherboard with my 1.1GHz Celeron, so its not a great accomplishment but its better than the 1GHz Celeron that was in it. Sorry for confusing things.
