Hi there,

I had just installed a new harddisk and was booting up when my entire system went dead on me. Subsequent attempts to boot up my system were in vain.

Is my motherboard dead?!!?!!?

A few steps to try are.

1) Remove the new drive and try it again.

2) Test the output of the power supply to all of the devices including the motherboard. If you get the stated output try the next step.

3) disconnect all the devices except for the video card. If you get a signal, then you've got a shorted device in all likelyhood.

4) If you get nothing, disconnect the ps from the motherboard and connect a known working device like a floppy drive, and retest the output voltages. If you get nothing try another ps.

Before the final nail is driven in the coffin, a few other things to test are the memory and the cpu. If you have access to spares, try that.

If defective devices, blown ps, bad memory, or bad cpu can be ruled out, then suspect the motherboard.

Good luck.
