Hi, I think either the mobo is dead or the CPU, if the CPU were dead, wouldn't the CPU fan still power on despite the rest? Right now there is nothing working except whatever is connected directly to the power supply...
help!

unplugged? I wish... the least costly solution: plug it back in.
I swap my own power supply from my computer (the one I'm typing this with) to the broken one and that's it.
The funny (not that funny actually) thing is that I had just fixed that computer, it had another board in it before that had a burned up mosfet capacitor, what the heck gives with that thing?

oupsy, swapping the PS didn't do anything...
1-bad CPU?
2-bad Mobo?
3-bad BIOS?When the CPU dies out, there is still power going through the mobo, right? Shouldn't the CPU fan work?
Mobo, would I see actual physical signs that there's a burned capacitor? The old mobo has a burned mosfet that literally has a hole burnt into it.
BIOS, shouldn't I get activity from the floppy? The led comes on and stays on...

Wait a minute. Unplug your floppy drive. Clear your CMOS. Try to bootup one more time, no drives connected. Just video card and a good stick of RAM. Do you get a POST or any beeps?

HI ALL
when you tryed response #7 did you remove floppy ribbon cable, normaly if light on floppy stays on cable is backward. But that should not cause fans not to turn on.
Try powering up with mobod outside of case. but it does look like bad moboad :(

yes, I did unplug the ribbon. I also think that it is a dead mobo. The thing is that it is the 2nd mobo to die in that case. The only thing that was left from the original system was the case and the power suppply.
The other mobo died of a burned transistor.
This one I don't know. I am afraid to put in another mobo just to see it fry the same way.
tahks for the reply
Patrick

I'll be darned. I tried the mobo outside the case laid flat on a table and remplaced the RAM module with other ones and it "started". the CPU fan came on whenever I shorted the power on pins. What is the next step? I placed it back in the case and connected the video card then the floppy. Still the same: appears dead except that the CPU fan comes on and the floppy light also doesn't blink, no activity (I made sure that it wasn't the ribbon that was inserted the wrong way).
what could it be?
Patrick

just to make sure... little plastic thingies that go between screw--mobo. Should I make further test outside the case? With the floppy plugged-in etc. I am sure it wouldn't hurt.
thanks
Patrick

yes the little plastic thingies. you should be able to connect all components out side of case being careful not to short any thing out. Also be careful of static electicity.
If you boot into win ,all cards should be in place or you might have to reinstall them.

set back...
I took the mobo outta case, laid it on the table and tried the floppy to no avail. I am ruling out a short. something else happened to that board, something sinister... the same thing that befell the previous board? I hope not... The CPU fan is working now, that's as far as it goes. I plugged the little speaker in and & there's no beep. I cleared the CMOS, I would like to be able to boot from the floppy in order to flash the BIOS (I have no ISA card, I'd flash blindly). That's it I am stumped
Patrick

I actually did it before and it is feasible, you just have to create a bootable disk with an autoexec.bat with all the awdflash commands in it...
Anyway, I can't even get it to seek for a floppy therefore I am dead in the water.
PB
