Hi all.

I have never had a problem with my rig that i could not fix until now. Heres whats going on:

When I start it up, everything works fine, except there is no video. No signal, no anything. Once the first beep which i beleive is the POST-test beep, my monitor gets a signal (or at least the light goes from steady blinking to solid) but there is still nothing there. The computer turns off very quickly when the power button is pressed. I have no idea what could be going on here. At one point when I started it up, it gave me 1 long and 4 short beeps. I took the ram out and put it back in and never got that again, but nothing was fixed.

Here is my setup:
Mobo: ASUS M2N-SLI DELUXE (socket AM2)
Ram: 2 GB (2 x 1 GB) PC2 6400 DUAL CH 4-4-4-15
Graphics: Nvidia MX8600GTS
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 FX62
HDD: 250GB Maxtor

You left out the specs on your PSU-that *could* be part of your problem.

its a 600 watt dynex. I cant image this being the problem because everything starts up fine, but I could be wrong.

If you get the POST beep, that means the motherboard and CPU are working to some extent.
Try disconnecting drives/devices to see if one of them is causing the lockup.

Also check along the monitor's edge to make sure the brightness control didn't accidentally get turned down by a pet or by someone moving something in the vicinity of the monitor.

Every sixty seconds you spend angry, upset or mad, is a full minute of happiness you'll never get back.

Hi Matt

Is there an honest computer shop in your town or nearby??

If not, here are some possibilities:

Your video card is SHOT, has been jarred from its slot or a component on the card itself has failed and needs replaced/fixed

Do some research on your video card (manufacturer, model, technical specifications, ...

Make sure your video cable has not been damaged

Replace it if you suspect it may be the problem

Talk to the folks at radio shack
some of the smaller ones are owned by retired computer geeks/programmers/...

Try to recall what you were doing before it failed

If possible, revert the set up to that state, if applicable

You need to isolate the problem

Replace suspected non functional parts with known funtional ones if possible to isoloate the fault

If you have any gamer/computer/electrician/engineer/technical/automechanic/... friends or relatives, neighbors, etc. try to gang tackle the problem

(the mechanics are good at troubleshooting/logic)
