I think i may have shorted my CD-RW and DVD-rom. On a new system im building i plugged them and set everything up then when i turned the comp on i heard a buzz then both the drive lights went on steady then about five seconds later both went off. I tried them again with a different (better antec) power supply and there was no response they don't even spin up. They are both Lite-On Drives but they are OEM and older than their 30 day warranty. So i cant send them back. IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN REVIVE these drives I am willing to break seals, solder.. and anything else u can think of. It just seems like a huge waste of money to throw them away.

Where did you buy them? Many vendors offer longer warranties. Newegg warranties Lite-on for a year. Bigger issue is why did what happened, happen. Are you sure the drives are bad and not the IDE channel? Are you sure you were using the correct voltage setting on the PS?

questions like this are why I tell people to NEVER build their own computers. let somebody else fry the components & pay for them.

I know its a dangerous hobby! but i love it :)
I tried them one at a time. They were both on the same line of the molexes from the power supply unit so im almost positive that when i was modding the power supply. i crossed the wires or put the molexes back on the wrong way. In short i think i shorted them out. I'm trying to figure out if anyone knows how to reset the logic boards or if there is a fuse or a capacitor i need to replace or something. I did get them from newegg do u think the warranty would cover something like this?

it isn't overly dangerous, just time consuming and possibly expensive. I prefer to buy systems that work.
Check the newegg policy, I bet they will cover it. Lots of people people install stuff wrong & fry it. Not sure how many times they will replace it for bad installs.

Did you make sure your IDE cables were turned the right way? Master/Slave jumpers set properly? Having these set wrong won't harm your drives in any way, they just won't work until the settings are right. It's tough to plug the power in wrong....you'd really have to force it to get it to go

If you plug them into a working powersupply, they should at least eject, whether there is an ide cable connected or not.
If they are fried, does anyone know where to get replacement parts? Might be easier to go through the exchange hassle / cheaper to buy new ones.
