Hello,

I'm currently debating whether or not to upgrade my memory now, or wait until a planned processor upgrade in a few months. However, I'm missing a crucial piece of information.

If I am not mistaken, most if not all of the recent Socket 775 motherboards support DDR2. However, I am uncertain if they require it - essentially, if DDR memory would be compatible with a DDR2 motherboard.

Might anyone be able to enlighten me?

Thanks,

There are socket 775 motherboard that support both DDR2/DDR. Asrock is the most recent motherboard and I figure the only and last motherboard that will not only support DDR2/DDR but also support Pentium 4/Celeron D/Pentium D and even the Core 2 Duo.

DDR/DDR2 motherboards have 4 slots of ram but they are broken up into 2 parts meaning 2 slots for DDR and 2 slots for DDR2. The slots are colored diff so you know which DDR generation goes where.

You can't stick DDR ram into a DDR2 slot, because DDR2 has more pins and the seating is diff then on a DDR slot.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ OC 2.7ghz
2GB Dual Channel DDR 3200
Nvidia 7900GT
SATA II 2x 300gig 7200rpm 16mb cache RAID-0
Gigabyte Nforce 4 SLI

If there was no difference between DDR & DDR2, they'd be no need for the '2'...lol.

DDR1 has 184-pins. DDR2 has 240-pins. They are not interchangeable.

So they are not interchangeable, but some motherboards support (have slots for) both?

Alright, thanks you two.

You must check out whether the ram you are thinking of buying or using is actually going to be compatible with your mboard before you buy or try the the ram. Online vendors often don't have enough information about the ram for you to determine whether it will be compatible. There are many compatibility factors involved other than just the mhz it runs at and the PCxxxx rating.
See response 5 in this for more info about compatibilty, and where you can find out what will work in your mboard for sure:
http://www.computing.net/hardware/w...

Once you know which modules are compatible for sure, you can search on the web for the best price for a module with that ID.

If you already have modules, if they are a brand name you can often use the ID on the module to look up which mboards they work in on the brand name maker's or distributor's web site.
