Subject: DDR2 PC2-4200 vs 4300OS: Win XPCPU/Ram: PIV 3GHzModel/Manufacturer: Dell Dimension E510 |
Comment: Hey all, quick question. Trying to upgrade my RAM, which has some DDR2 PC2-4300 in it. I'm having trouble finding some of that, but I find a lot of PC2-4200. My friend tells me that there isn't a difference between PC2-4200 and 4300. That it's just a rounding issue, that when you multiply the speed by 8 it comes out to 4264, which can either be rounded up to 4300 or down to 4200. Is this accurate? Is there actually no difference?

Reply: (edit)Bet it was 5300??? Use the dell site (they will check your computer online with an automated app) for exact memory or use a memory configurator on another memory site. I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

Reply: (edit)I believe it is a rounding issue. PC2-4200 (DDR2-533) & is designed to run at 266MHz. 266Mhz is actually a rounded number itself & should be 266.666...Mhz. The DDR rating is really 533.333...MHz. Anyhow, 533.333... x 8 = 4266.666... I don't know why the majority of manufacturers rounded down to PC2-4200 instead of up to PC2-4300. Maybe it's a JEDEC thing?
