Comment:

Hi, I want to upgrade my PC by addind some memory. My PC supports both DDR & SDRAM. Now, it has 256mb (PC133) in one SDRAM slot. So, I have one SDRAM slot free for another memory, and two empty slots for DDR memory. I now I can't mix both kinds of memory. I was thinking of getting another 256 mb but I was wondering if I should get a 512mb DDR instead. That way, if in the future I want to upgrade anymore my PC I will still have a DDR slot free on my PC. Which would be the best choice. Any advice will be very appreciate. Thx in advance.

Just to clarify one thing, DDR ram is SDRAM. (Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory) PC133 is single data rate. It is just not designated as such as when it was current there was no such thing as DDR RAM. All RAM was single data rate

After that you have almost answered your own question. The choice is yours.

Personally on a 700Mhz PC I would stay with the SDRAM PC133. The latency is a bit better then the DDR for your system.

I think he meant 1700, as in an XP1700+. I would go with the DDR. You should notice some increase in speed. And you can probably find a 512 PC2100 or PC2700 for around the same price as a 256 PC133 stick if you keep an eye out for a rebate deal.

But with either of them, XP will really appreciate the added 256 megs of RAM.

Thank you all for your info/suggestions. I think I'll go with a 512DDR. In fact, my PC is a 1700 and the prize is almost the same as a 256SDR. Plus, maybe in some more time I'll instal another 512DDR on the second slot.

Thanks again, really appreciated.

Be very careful when installing DDR RAM. It is easier to install incorrectly than SDR RAM. Make absolutely sure the notch in the stick is aligned with the bump in the RAM slot. Have good lighting, or use a flashlight to verify this before power up. You can easily press the stick in so that both clips lock down while it is actually 180 degrees off. If powered up with the RAM installed backwards, it will fry both the RAM and the motherboard.
