DDR vs DDR3

I am getting mixed messages about what type of video card to use on a motherboard that calls out DDR. The editor of a well known publication says its OK to use a DDR3 video card on a DDR motherboard. I was under the impression that you had to maintain the same DDR configuration between mobo and video cards. The mobo in question is the DFI LANParty nF4 SLI-DR. The video card is an evga 6600 GT 128MB DDR3 PCI-E. I need a second and third opinion here. What say anyone?

The above comments are correct, but just to give you additional assurance: I run a 6600 GT DDR3 on a SDRAM DDR2 system, and a 6600 GT DDR3 on a DRAM DDR, too.
Love my 6600 GTs... Which brand of 6600 GT 128mb are you buying?
