Comment:

I have dell dimension 4550 with p4 2.4ghz processor and 128MB 333MHz DDR SDRAM. My question is can I put in a second 128MB DDR SDRAM chip with only 266MHZ speed or should I put in 333 MHZ compatible chip. I know that the computer itself can work with a 266mhz chip. I am not sure if I can have two RAM chips that support different bus speeds.

Thanks,
Ram.

Are you sure that the 266MHz will work? I would think that if it's 333MHz you will need one that's the same or higher. So if you put a higher MHz than the original, the speed will be decreased to match. But if you put one that is less than the original, it might not be recognized. Short answer, no it might not work. Use a 333MHz. It's better to have them matching.

Hope that helps.

Kevin.

hello
to be safe go with the same or higher.
if the slower was to work at all it would slow down the rest.

Wawadave is right. If you put in a 266Mhz stick, it would slow your existing one down to 266Mhz if your BIOS is set to configure your ram speed automatically. If your BIOS is set manually to 333Mhz, your PC probably won't boot with the 266Mhz stick in it...

You can go to Crucial.com and try their search tool to see what types of sticks are compatible. You put in the specs of your computer and it searches for the correct RAM for you.
