Hi,

I am considering upgrading my RAM, but am not sure which to buy. For around 100 pounds I could either by 1gb of SD-RAM PC133 (in two 512 modules) or 512mb (1 module) of PC2100 DDR RAM. I have a ECS K7S5A mobo. Which type of RAM would be best? I am thinking of also upgrading to an Athlon XP 2000+ later on as well. Which would be the best for that?

Thank-You

David

Depends really. If you use a lot of very
large apps and your current memory load is
near 512MB and you swap a lot, then you
would be better off with the 1GB of SDRAM.
But if you rarely approach that much ram use
then the 512 DDR would give you better
performance.

DDR way outperforms the other. Make sure your motherboard will support it before you drop the pounds. 256 sticks of ddr cost less per mb than the 512. In USA 512 of pc2100 is around 150$ 256 is around 50$.
So 2 sticks of 256 is less costly than 1 stick of 512

Trip: I only currently have 128mb, and this DOES swap alot. However I do not usually use many large apps, except for the GIMP/Photoshop.

Ron: My mobo does support DDR. In UK (www.crucial.com/uk) you can get 512mb of DDR from 80-100 pounds. I would prefer one module, as I only have 2 DDR slots, and might want to upgrade later to 1gb by dropping an extra 512 in.

Thank-you for both of your responses. Overall I think I shall buy the DDR, as I dont expect to be using so many big apps often, and would prefer the better performance from the DDR, I just wasn't sure if the DDR would make a lot of noticable difference, but it seems it would do.

Thank you again

David

I don't see how you could be using 1024meg of ram efficiently.

Get the DDR. 512 is plenty enough!

There are problems with more than 512MB ram when using Win ME (I read it on this site). Is there a limit with Linux RH 7.2/Win 98 dual boot ??????
I may be confused though.
