hi,

Nope, it's not another typical Dual Channel question. it's a weird one here.

spec :

amd 2500+ barton
1 x 256mb kingston valueram
1 x 512mb cosair valueram

after i do an upgrade with this 512mb cosair ram, i had a pleasant surprise that when the system boot, there was an additinal sentence which reads "DDR Dual Channel Enabled..."

how can that be? it doesn't really bothers me. but i just find it strange as i know in order for system to run in dual channel mode, 2 identical (same brand, model) ram stick must be install.

Is the system seeing 768MB of RAM on boot-up?

That statement isn't necessarily true. While using identical sticks is generally the best way to go, two sticks of similar specs will usually/sometimes work. Where does the 256 stick come into play? Or was it removed & replaced with a 512 stick?

Asus A7N8X-X
1800+ @8x210mhz
512mb PC3200
Ti4200/8X 128mb

OtheHill,

yes, it shows "786432k OK".

jam,

the 256 kingston(cl 3) stick was originally there when i first built this pc. the 512 cosair(cl 2.5) valuaselect stick was an add-on upgrade. so, both sticks are working together on dual channel.

next,

"While using identical sticks is generally the best way to go, two sticks of similar specs will usually/sometimes work."

but both have different amount of ram on it, surely that's not identical.

anyway, i would like to know if it's only me or it's actually quite a norm thing to get dual channel with different rams?

thanks.
