Specs: Windows XP
Is there a set format to transfer data from my PC (windows 2000) to my laptop (windows vista)? I believe that I do have the correct cable. Do I switch both machines off, or can I just connect while both are on etc?

Thank you

A McNeilly

If you connect both PCs via direct link (cat 5 or something like that), you need a crossover cable.
You can connect the machines, while they are running.
Both must be member of the same workgroup.
Then you can rightclick the folder or drive and configure it for sharing.

There are a few types of data transfer cables. Do you mean using the network adapters or other such as usb or com ports?

If you mean the network almost all newer computers can correct for the cable used. Two basic types are cross over and patch. To be old time correct a computer to computer needs a cross over but not now normally. They do sometimes have to be turned off to correct for cable. If you have a hub or switch then common patch cables can be used.
