if your windows installation is on C and you boot from C then the desktop will usually be on C

Personally I make it a practise to save only shortcuts on my desktop and to put programs & files elsewhere as desired. I also keep the desktop tidy by placing the shortcuts in a couple of folders with Quicklaunch tabs enabled on the taskbar.
