Data missing after converting NTFS to FAT32

March 13, 2011 at 10:32:54
Specs: Windows XP
I converted my HD from NTFS to FAT32 so I can use it with my PS3. I used guiformat and it only took a few seconds. I'm really worried that I've actually just deleted 300gb worth of stuff. My HD says it's empty! Have I just got rid of everything and how can I reverse or recover this? HELP!!!!!

I'm not familiar with the program but, from its name and what you describe, it sounds as if you have formatted your drive. You may, or may not, be able to recover your data. Have a look at the tools listed here to see if any of them can help.

I know this doesn't help you now but, as a warning to others, never attempt to do this sort of operation without having a backup of your data; it's very easy to lose data. You should, in any case, have a separate backup of any important data. Your hard disk could fail tomorrow without warning.

You can go from FAT32 to NTFS, but not NTFS to FAT32

Sounds like you have formatted your drive.

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.

It can be done with the appropriate software (e..g Paragon Hard Disk Manager), but I doubt that guiformat has this ability.

Yeah I've made an arse of it! Got ahead of myself and reformatted it. I'm in the process, albeit 8 hours worth, of recovering all the data! That'll teach me!

Testdisk can probably fix the partition. Or recuva can find the files easily.
