This should really be asked in the Win98 forum....

Can you get into safe mode? If you can, do a search for

*.pwl

Delete it & reboot. If prompted for a password on the reboot, just click OK.

If you can't get in thru safe mode, boot off a Win98 boot floppy & do the same as above thru DOS mode.

Just hit cancel when it asks for a password. That just to get on a network, you will be able to get into the local machine.

Does the password request show up before or after you get the 98 splash screen? If you're getting it before the 98 screen then it's probably a password set in the bios and you may need to open the case and locate the 'clear cmos' jumper. Set it in the 'clear' position, turn the PC on for a few seconds, turn it off and put the jumper back in the standby position.

OK, that doesn't answer the question I asked in #3 but you do have a bios password set. And if the option for a system password is available, a paranoid person who sets a bios password will probably set a system password.

You can clear both via 'clear cmos' and/or 'clear password' jumpers on the motherboard. (A 'clear password' jumper may or may not exist.) You should go to the dell support page for your model and download the manual or just examine the motherboard closely for the relevent jumpers.
