dark screen, and other things too?

Yesterday I was having problems with windows (not Windows) freezing and my text coming up horribly slowly, so after eight hours of rooting I finally closed an .exe running in my processes called 'ati2evxx.exe'. This cleared up the text problem and the window problem, mostly, as well. But now, if I don't move my mouse for more than 5-30 seconds, my screen goes blank. The moment I touch the mouse, it comes back on. This is not related to any settings I have in my battery quickset. Furthermore, my taskbar has been freezing -- any time I unplug my AC adapter, the icon says that I am still plugged in, and my internet connection icon says that it is still connecting when it is in fact connected. These may be minor problems, but it's really irritating me :(. Can anyone please help? thank you!
