Comment:

Just recently i began getting an error while trying to view blank cds or dvds and WMP11 does not recognize any drives capable of burning.

d: not accessible incorrect function error

It is a LiteOn DVD-RAM drive. This is the first problem i have had with it and it seems to be XP specific. Vista has no problems. I can burn with Nero 8 in XP with no problems. Also Kubuntu burns fine and reads everything.

I tried uninstalling the drive and restarting with no luck. Is there any other drivers i can reinstall? I put in new firmware for the drive trying to get it to work with no success.

Any ideas?

XP may have a problem with the upper and lower filters.

Try downloading and running the 127kb program from Microsoft.

If you made a typo or mixed things up and this applies to Vista and not XP:
"I can burn with Nero 8 in XP with no problems."

Whenever you load or re-load Windows (95 and up)from scratch, after Setup is finished you must load the drivers for the mboard, particularly the main chipset drivers, so that Windows has all the proper drivers for and information about your mboard.
If you didn't do that for XP in this case, it's quite common for the hard drive controller(s) to not be detected properly, and if they aren't, it's quite common for optical (CD or DVD) drives to run in PIO mode rather than the faster modes they are capable of - if they are in PIO mode, they are detected as a CD or DVD drive but not as a drive capable of burning - XP and burning software will not find any drives capable of burning .
Loading the proper mboard main chipset drivers will cure the problem in that case.

The main chipset drivers are always on the CD that comes with a new mboard, but they may NOT be in the driver and software downloads on a brand name system builder's or mboard manufacturer's web site for your model - in that case, you have to go to the maker of the main chipset's web site and get the main chipset drivers from there.
.....

If you're SURE you loaded the main chipset drivers, or in any case, see this:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devic...

If the CD or DVD drive's connection is in PIO mode, try setting it to UDMA if available, save settings, then go back in and see if the connection is in a mode other than PIO.
- if it is, your problem is fixed.
- if it is still in PIO mode, if the main chipset drivers have been loaded, Windows has inserted lines in the Registry to force the drive into PIO mode because the drive has been detected as producing too many data errors.
If you have two optical drives on one data cable, both may be detected as producing data errors if only one drive is - in that case try disconnecting one of the optical drives, then trying to set the drive to UDMA if available again (you may have to change a slave jumper to master on the drive still connected when you do that).
