crossover and patch cable?

what's the different between crossover cable and patch cable?
Or to put it another way, crossover cable is used to directly connect two PCs via similar ports (serial, parallel, NIC).
A patch cable refers to just a short normal cable of any kind.

If you're speaking of a lan cable, serial, or parallel cable, patch cables are wired straight through. Crossover cables (lan) and serial or parallel cables (laplink} have certain wires crossed in order to transmit and receive data in a manner not recognized by a cable wired straight through.
