Am I making any huge mistakes with these choices?I will be eternally grateful for anything you can point out.
$500 approx monitor -- circuit city bought tn panel 24" (I gotta watch it perform before I pick)
$67 mobo -- gigabyte
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...$185 cpu -- e8400
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...$198 video card -- 8800gt 512mb 9" x 4"
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...$65 Case + fan + psu -- hec orion x power 585w psu
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...$107 hdd -- wd se16 640gb
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...$110 hdd -- 500gb (passive cooling worries me)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...$32 dvd burner
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...$95 ram – Kingston 4gb (2 x 2gb)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...
total: $1359

- get a different motherboard. Here's one of the hottest selling LGA 775 boards out there right now:
- the PSU in that case sucks. Protect your hardware...buy something decent:
CORSAIR 650W w/52A on single +12v rail -$90
- if you're gonna get an 8800GT, get one with 512MB:
EVGA GeForce 8800GT 512MB - $163
- why such a big internal HDD & why buy an open box one?
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB 7200 16MB Cache - $65
- why are you spending so much on RAM? If you're running a 32-bit OS, there's not much point getting 4GB. Get 2GB...you can always add more later IF you get a board with 4 DIMM slots:
Crucial BALLISTIX 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2-800 4-4-4-12 - $19
Reconsider the monitor too. $500? You can get a 22" for about 1/2 that price & you'll probably never miss the 2".
"And that's the fishing line, because Sharkboy said so!"

The E8400 is a good choice IMHO. However, if you're getting a case and PSU for ^5, the PSU is probably not very good(the case may not be either, but that’s much less critical).

mobo:
ASUS P5N32-E SLI $115
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...CPU:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 $185
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...VC:
EVGA 512-P3-N801-AR GeForce 8800GT $185
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...Case you pick is fine.
HD:
Seagate ST3250410AS 250GB $65
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...XHD: thats OK
Drive:
SAMSUNG $26
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...
LITE-ON $30
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...Ram:
4gbs is pointless unless your go to use OS w/x64 bit
Kingston HyperX 1GB ddr2 $29ea(you only need 3gb)

i think my psu is safe. i looked up the company hec, apparently, they used to make psus for big expensive servers. i still wish there was a way to figure out EXACTLY what kind of voltage protection i have in there.

Why do you insist on a board with the "value" G31 northbridge, slower ICH7 southbridge, only 2 DIMM slots & integrated graphics? Because it's cheap? You seem to have no problem overspending on other items...why short change yourself on the board? If you've done any research at all, you should know that the P35 chipset is THE most popular & arguably the best performing chipset currently available for the LGA 775 platform.
"i think my psu is safe"
It's your call. You're putting $1000+ worth of hardware in the hands of a $23 PSU.

"And that's the fishing line, because Sharkboy said so!"

it does bother me that it is $23. but ive searched and searched and found absolutely no reports of this thing damaging anything except itself.

Get something P35 chipset (support 65nm and 45nm cpu) and ICH9R, which support Native queue command
anything less are junks 8)
