Product: Custom.

I am looking to use my P1 machine as a small music server, possibly as a backup/storage server too. I will buy a 250GB SATA drive and a SATA PCI controller card so its old IDE controller wont be a problem. I just wanted to know if using it as a music server would overwhelm it concidering its current specs. Here are the proposed specs:

P1 225MHz MMX
128MB SD-RAM
1.7GB 5400RPM IDE HDD C:\
250GB 7200RPM SATA HDD E:\
100MBps NIC
Windows 98SE
450W ATX "Ritmo" PSU

Most of the time it will only have one person accessing it, the most work it should ever have handed to it would be backing up data and having someone access it. I'm obviously not looking for a blazing fast machine but just a simple setup, I may also add a USB 2.0 card so I can do quick backups with my 40GB USB drive. Is this too much for the beast?

It will work just fine. I used an old P1 100mhz computer for years for my music server.

I'd just make sure that the new PCI card works with the old PCI slot.
Most PCI video cards and even some soundcards and firewire cards don't work with old (in my case Pentium II) motherboards.

I guess I will have to check the reccommended requirements or something. The motherboard is an Acorp SD-P5TA with an Intel i430TX chipset and I think it has PCI 2.1.. At least I know that it will accept up to 256Mb of RAM. If this computer fails I might be able to use a 1.1GHz Celeron system depending on its condition.

hmm, one thing just came to mind. Will 98SE be able to see a 250GB drive? I will probably have 3 partitions, one 5% for the computers SWAP file and some programs, one 40% for the music and videos and one 55% for backups. I guess that it will have to be FAT32 too.. hmmm

I have spotted a PCI SATA controller for just $15(AU) with the same SATA controller as my main rig, and a 4 port USB PCI card for just $13. I will probably grab a Seagate or WD drive.. Heh, it will be my super P1 rig.
