Is there any way to create a bad block on a hard drive on purpose? Nothing to permanently damage it; I'm testing out several pieces of disk-checking software, but for the first time, all of the equipment in my lab is working perfectly (never thought that would annoy me before). Faking a bad block so the scanners will pick it up and fix it would be sufficient for my purposes.

Thanks!

You can manually mark sectors as bad with norton utilities, at least you could with the older dos versions. I haven't used any of the windows versions so I don't know about them.
