Installed a new larger HD and installed full version of XP. To correct some issues I updated the Bios using a program from ABIT (have a ABIT IS7 MB). Since this last (24 hours)I have been having constant crashing anywhere from 1sec to 1 min. Cannot get into Windows even in safe mode. Have tried to boot from CD to reinstall Windows but crashes or freezed during install or repair. I followed directions for upgrading bios by ABIT and upgrade seems to have taken as I have seen the new bios when I get it to post. Memory seems fine, tried old hard drive and have same problem. What should I try replacing first? Any ideas?

How? It crashes before I can get into windows to use the program I got from ABIT and my floppy isn't working.

If you floppy isn't working how did you upgrade the BIOS in the first place?
Have you been into the BIOS and reset the BIOS setting. If it crashes before you get that far our can force a reset by clearing the CMOS memory.

I upgraded the bios using a program I downloaded from abit for that purpose. I have tried to reset bios and have cleared the cmos jumpers when computer is off. No help.

Does your computer crash when in the bios screen? Can you put the old hard drive back in and see what happens? How big is your new hard drive and how big was the old one?

Yes, it has crashed when in bios. I have tried old hard drive, it got to windows desktop but was frozen, no mouse or keyboard functions, I restarted and it crashed like the new one. The old one was 80 gig and new is 320 gig.

Crashing in the Bios?? Maybe locking up the pc when you enter the Bios? If you can get into the Bios long enough to Load Defaults and save settings and reboot. If it is still locking up, your gonna have to get a bootable Dos Bios updater and flash it with the last revision you had on before this problem appeared.

I would put the old hard drive in and disconnect the other drive(s),all but one memory stick and all your cards except the video card. Make sure your video card and memory stick are seated properly, reseat them and then boot up to see if your computer will boot. If it does then reconnect each device one at a time to find the problem. If that does not work you may have damaged the motherboard while removing the hard drive. The best way to test would be to bench test so you would have more room to work but this will invlove some time to remove all the hardware if you are not that familiar with the pc. Good luck

Before starting the computer up reset the bios. Unplug the pc and move the jumper to short out the bios for 30 seconds then put the jumper back, plug it back in and reboot

How to upgrade BIOS:1.) Download Bios for I7 (is724.exe).
2.) Create Dos BootDisk by running boot98c.exe.
3.) Copy is724.exe to boot floppy (if not enough space, place on second floppy disk)
4.) Boot Dos Bootdisk (no cdrom support needed at menu)
5.) At command prompt a:\>, enter copy is724.exe c: (if is724.exe is on 2nd floppy, place in drive)
6.) At command prompt a:\>, enter c:
7.) At command prompt c:\> enter is724.exe to extract all files
8.) At command prompt c:\> enter runme.bat
9.) After BIOS updated, pull off the power cord and then clear the CMOS data via jumper before restarting system.

Yes, it does crash while in bios. I have been in long enough to reset defaults and reboot but it didn't help - still crashed at will. I do not have a working floppy drive. I have turned off power and cleared CMOS and have even tried removing the battery. I will try going to bare bones and work from there. Any other suggestions will be appreciated. I am comfortable with removing and installing parts as I have built dozens of these computers including this one - I'm just stumped!

Flashing the BIOS from Windows is somewhat risky, especially if you were have problems with Windows to begin with. Get yourself a floppy drive & update the BIOS the right way (from DOS) as detailed by SysLock in response 10.

I solved my problems. I replaced the power supply and all is fine, no more bios problems either. Thanks for the suggestions.
