I saw this in an ad for $10 after $15 rebate. Is it any good? or pure crap? Cuz I don't know anything about speakers.
Altec Lansing speakers
3-piece system w/ subwoofer
20 watt RMS
plug and play
Any suggestions on good speakers...^(',')]}~~~:]>

Altec's are very good speakers
It's a low end system though (20 watts)
If you're not interesred in high end sound, they are very good speakers. High end would be like a klipsch system for $$$$When all else fails beat the $%!* out of it!!!

What do you mean by high end? I just want to play a few mp3s and play games like worms armageddon and tribes. Will they be good enough for me? I figured that the wattage was low just by googling and looking at the speakers that popped up.

I've always been very happy with the PC speaker setup from Cambridge Soundworks and the one from Boston Acoustics. They are certainly pricey-er than the Altecs you describe but you'll never need to upgrade and they kick ass. You can turn them way up with out fear of distortion. Save your pennies and get the good stuff.

Budget audio would be like a AM/FM/CD player in your car with quadraphonic sound.
A highend system would be a AM/FM/CD/Tape player with a 12 CD changer, run through a preamp/crossover, out to your amplifiers which are each designated to a paticular frequency range, each amp hooked up to the batteries with 00-gauge wire, several 1500 farad capacitors for high drain peaks, a 170A alternator, 2 MTX 15" subwoofers wired in series hooked up to a low impendance monoraul amplifier with a frequency responce of 15-150Hz, a 4-channel amplifier hooked up to 4 woofers placed in the proper acoustical zones of your vehicle for focal point energy at the driver with a frequency response of 150Hz-1500Hz, a 4-channel amplifier hooked up to your 4 midrange speakers also placed acousically for focal point strength with a frequency response of 1500-4500Khz, and a 2-channel amplifier hooked up to your tweeters with a frequency response of 4500Hz-20KHz.
A very good entry-level compitition audio system for your car will cost you around $1000 USD. I have invested over 1500 into my car stereo. If you want a cheap system that "just works", you can pick up a pretty decent starter system for under $150.00 USD. Similarly with computers. If you "just want sound", you can get a decent system for under $50.00, (which is the route I took with my computer sound), or you can get a Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 7.1 channel sound card for $250.00, spend $750.00 for a Dobly Digital 7.1 surround sound set from Bose.
Bottom line: If you just play a few games, listen to MP3's, and "just want sound", then the cheaper system is for you. If you are a serious audiophile, want to biuld a HTPC, are a serious gamer, or in the case of cars want to enter into a stereo competition, then go whole hog.
The only stupid question is the one not asked.

giggles, everybody's ears are different. I suggest you go to a local store that has a variety of speakers and listen to them. If your ears like inexpensive speakers, buy them.

Uh... I dont understand most of what that last post just talked about, but I helped me to decide to go with the altecs, I mean they are a $40 set w/ $15 instant savings and $15 mail in rebate, i think they will do me just fine. Compared with the setup i have now:
a regular speaker that came from my stereo wired up to a headphone jack and plugged halfway into my $5 soundcard, the altecs have to be better! And by the way $250 for a soundcard is insane unless you are a professional musician. Thanks for the help everyone!^(',')]}~~~:]>

Geez, k_semler! Are you trying to give poor giggles a heart attack with all your fancy frequency talk?
I own a 10 watt 3-piece system from Cyber- Acoustics, they cost me about $20 and I couldn't be happier with them.
I guess what I am saying is, if my $20 10 watt speakers are good, then those $40 20 watt speakers should be pretty great!Just get them!

I got the speakers today and they were worth everypenny, I couldn't believe how good they sound! Plus I got an extra %10 off because my dad is a teacher and we got a discount card. Total I only paid $7.50 for a $40 pair of speakers, and you know what my ears like the sound of cheap speakers!
