Crackling Sound

February 9, 2007 at 11:25:22
Specs: windows xp, 512mb

The sound on my PC has started making strange crackling noise. It doesn't make listening to music unbearable, but is very irritating, especially as it gets louder as the volume is increased.

My initial thought was that something was loose, so I disconnected the sound card and speakers and reconnected it all. This did not help.

The crackling comes out of all 5 of my speakers (I use a 5.1 surround setup) so it is not a speaker problem.

The sound card is fairly new so I wouldn't have thought that would be the problem either.

Any ideas?

You don't mention your system specs, but if your motherboard is based on a VIA chipset & the soundcard is a sound blaster, there's a known compatibility problem with the two.

If that's what you have, go to the following site & scroll down to "Patch for Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live! and Audigy-series drivers"

Here's another possibilty, but it refers to stuttering, not crackling

Thanks for the help, I managed to fix it by updating the drivers (which weren't available on the manufactures site, luckily I found someone else who had the same problem and found the fix).

I just solved it for my Soundblaster PCI128 by tweeking the PCI latency time from 32 to 64 using the following tool:

PCI Latency Tool 3.1 v2

The soft cracking sound comes when I move my mouse over the screen or load programs.

Nothing else helpt. Driver changed, BIOS settings changed without any succes but latency timing did the trick. My audio driver is AudioPCI ES1371, ES1373
