CPU with MMX or not

Specs: Windows 7
I am researching which AMD CPU to use for use in a Media center computer (with a price cap of $100). On the bench mark test, 2 cpus have scores of 3043 vs 2587 but the lower score CPU is shown as having the MMX instruction set. Is there a real advantage of having the MMX instruction set?

what I am trying to really understand is what role the MMX,SSE,SSE2,SSE3,SSE3a,3DNOW! instruction set plays in performans in everyday computing vs graphics vs games etc

Both ought to have mmx I'd think. It is a rather old subset.

Programs need to have support for the cpu instruction sets. If they do or do not they still tend to run. Just not as fast.

Everyday computing will have no effect for most of those.

Game and graphic tend to use those a lot.

The program you are using may not be reading the chip info correctly.

I think both should have some type of MMX instruction set. If you read the link you know that MMX is copyrighted by Intel.

Look for 3Dnow, SSE, SSE2, SSE3.

All AMD CPUs since the K6 have MMX.
MMX doesn't really do anything today. Actually, it it didn't ever do anything...lol. It was mostly just a marketing gimmick.

Multimedia heavy-lifting today is handled by SSE2 and SSE3. These SIMD extensions are basically "shortcuts" that a processor can take to efficiently handle certain types of instructions. If a CPU doesn't support SSE3, the program will usually fall back to SSE2. If the CPU doesn't support SSE2 and plain old SSE isn't enough, then the program will either (a) refuse to work or (b) have the CPU do things the old fashioned way--compute everything on its floating point unit. This is much slower than using a SIMD "shortcut."
