Hello,

I have a P4 2.4 GHz with 1GB of DDR PC2100 RAM and a GeForce 6800LE. If I got a new CPU (maybe a pentium 3.0 or 3.2 GHz for around £100), would I see a great improvement in gaming (halflife 2 etc). Or is the improvement only slight and not worth the upgrade?

What FSB and Slot does your motherboard support/have? The P4 2.4gHz is probably a socket 478 and it came in several different varieties in either 400, 533 or 800 mHz FSB. That means your motherboard is based on either 100,133 or 200 basic FSB (The P4 quad pumps the underlying motherboard setting) Before considering a CPU upgrade you need to know whether your motherboard supports the higher FSB as the socket 478 chips at 3gHz or higher fun on fsb 800 (4x200). The fact you have PC2100 ram tells me your FSB is based on 133mHz. To upgrade your CPU you would need to know your motherboard can be run at 200 and you you would need to replace your ram with PC3200. Your 100 pound upgrade will end up costing you a whole lot more by the time you replace the motherboard, CPU and ram.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Thanks for the response. I am not sure about my motherboard. It is a Gigabyte 8PE667 Ultra, I was afraid that there would be some motherboard upgrade problems! Maybe I should just wait until I can afford a whole new PC then...

I just realised, my RAM is PC2700, I upgraded to the maximum that my motherboard could use.

the highest CPU supported is p4 3.06ghz (HT)northwood core with fsb533.

Whether you will see a dramatic performance increase between your 2.4 and the 3.06, I do not know. That would be your last upgrade on this motherboard.

the answer to the original question is no, unless you do a lot of intense gaming.

You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

I can only seem to find a p4 3.06ghz (HT)northwood core with FSB 800MHz, would that work in my mother board?
