How can I find the mode of CPU(if the cpu is hyper thread or dual core or quad core) from on top of OS ?.

I think the program you may want is cpuz. Otherwise you can start at help and support pages for system information and you might then have to look up the model. "Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10
