Nothing unusual considering the use you are putting the CPU to. Well within acceptable limits.
AMD quote an absolute maxium of 90C for their CPUs so you have a bit to go yet.

uhh yah 65 is fine according to AMD, but 65C is risking it, I do not suggest running at anything over 50C. I have heard the hotter your cpu, the more potential there is for decreased performance. Can someone confirm this?

You didn't say anything about 65C in your original question...where is that temp coming from?
40C at idle is good...50C under load is good...65C is getting warm to the point that you should ask yourself "what can I do to lower my temp".
Download this program called TOAST...run it for at least 20 min & see what your temp maxxes out at & post back:

"considering i use an amd athlon xp?" I'm reading between the lines...but by this statement, it seems that you buy into the myth that the Athlon runs hot & the P4 doesn't?

Temp doesn't decrease performance in the Athlon...but it can decrease lifespan. High temp can slow the P4 though. The P4 has thermal protection built in...if it reaches a pre-programmed "trigger" temp, it "downshifts" or "throttles back" to a slower speed to try to cool itself. AMD CPUs don't have this feature, but many motherboards for the AthlonXP have a similar feature built in...
