We live in a house with no air conditioning (sux i know) and the temperatures can climb up to 98f on a very hot summer day. how many fan's will i need to keep a 2600+ amdXP from overheating?

Only way to find out is to run it. Actually, with the ambient temperature that high, fans can only do so much. Suggest that you may need to look at water cooling, or invest in a small window A/C unit that can blow cold air on the PC.

This thread saves me making a new one, yes. I live in a 3 floor townhouse and I am right at the top where all the heat naturally rises, and no air conditioning systems. It gets very hot on the hot summerdays, room temp is ususally +5 hotter then the local weather. without any load my PC is 45C and motherboard 47c. Full load my motherboard can hit 56C and cpu 56c as well. I can feel the heat myself from my computer and I hope this isnt dangerous levels.
Abit KD7-E mobo.

those are pretty good temps considering the ambient. If you keep the case cover off that will help - your motherboard temp suggest your case airflow may be a problem and the easiest solution is taking the cover off.

As long as those are really accurate temperatures you are okay. Just to be safe, set your warning signal at 60C if your BIOS has that feature.

To tell the truth, I'm not sure what 98F translates to in C temps. However, if the Room temperature is that high, keep an eye on it!

For an AMD CPU, those temps are excellent.
XP CPU's operating temps of 50-68C (idle to load) are fine and normal. Well within specs.

Normal ambient room temp (72F) = 22C
98F = 37C

If cpu runs at 45C at normal room temp, its temp will rise at about the same rate (or actually a litle more since cooling is less efficient at higher temps) as the ambient temperature rises.

BTW, removing case can actually impair cooling in some fan configurations since airflow is no longer channeled over the hot spots.
