Hello,

I have a problem with my CPU Speed. Thursday night I think our house experienced power surges (flickering lights). My PC was fine when I was using it but the next time I started up it had reset the CPU to 1300.

I had tried the multiplier etc, and the maximum I can get it is 2000XP. Any higher than that I get no picture on the monitor.

Now all I need to know is there a way to tell if its the Motherboard or the CPU which has blown, so I can buy a new one.

Can you help me please.

try to update the bios... it might help but the only thing I can think up would be to pu that cpu in another system and try it out... I am sure a computer store would do that because they would make money on selling you a new cpu or motherboard :)

Without specialist help you cant really tell which is damaged heres a few options ; check your ram in another pc, use memtest.
It could be your bios has gone duff due to the power outs, has it got a backup bios onboard eg some gigabyte mobos do. clear the cmos , if it still POSTS your mobo should be ok.
The cpu could be tested in another mobo at any resonable pc upgrade center shop 4 a small fee, the cpu if damaged is most unlikely to work at all.

Have you tried another psu ? a faulty psu is more than likely to cause problems,
The psu i suspect is the most likely culprit here as computers dont 'half work' there on or there off in my experience.
hoe old is the psu looks decieve try a min 450 watt unit with a known brand name eg ennertek , codegen etc + they wont break the bank.
hope fully useful nfo

:)

I have reset the Bios quite a few times now, but today I have found the right spec's for the Chip motherboard combination. Here it is

Athalon 3000XP+

166 Mhz x 13% at 1.65 volts

or

200 Mhz x 10.4 at 1.65 volts

I shal try these tonight see if it has any impact.

I think I only have 350 watts which is not qiite high enough, should really get a new one. I know its not a 450.

The strange thing is that my RAM seems to be fine.

Well, changing to

166 Mhz x 13% at 1.65 volts

or

200 Mhz x 10.4 at 1.65 volts

didn't work.

Hi
is your cpu 'retail' in an amd box, or OEM ?
i wouldnt bother running it at 200 fsb unless you have ddr400 pc3200 spec ram
does the green mobo led lit up confirming the system is ok?

So taking it back to the shop today. See what they say.

Hi again,
i ask is it a oem cpu because we had a prob this week end with a 3200 xp doing the same , back at the vendor they told us a dodgy company in Taiwan had been remoulding /rebadging cpus sold as oem brand, hence retailers arent aware what they sell are OC'd chips.
The crunch comes a week or so down the line when they fry.
apparently its very difficult to tell them apart except a retail boxed version obviously is boxed as opposed to a 'tray' item
boxed retail $155
oem $109 theres a hint we think.
hence we always get a guarantee on purchase.
hopefully not your problem as above , good luck let us know how you get on.

Got it back from the shop, today. They said thet the CMOS/BIOS had reset itself (Like I didn't know that already) and that it was missing a jumper. Cost £15 (about $30) for work spent fixing the machine.

Anyway it is all fixed now. Thanks for your help everybody.
